L’Chaim! To celebrate the great traditions of Torrance Theatre Company since its opening in 1999 as well as the great “traditions” in the small Jewish village of Anatevka, we will be kicking off our 14th consecutive musical summer with one of Broadway's greatest musicals of all time, Fiddler on the Roof. With music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick and book by Joseph Stein, Fiddler on the Roof has become one of the most iconic movie musicals of all time. Based on the stories of Sholom Aleichem, the film starring Chaim Topol has changed the lives of Americans since its screen debut in 1971. The original New York Stage production directed and choreographed by Jerome Robbins opened in 1964, where packed houses left the theatre in tears of joy, sadness and laughter due to the show’s captivating story, songs, and dance numbers.
Set in Tsarist Russia in the quaint village of Anatevka in 1905, Tevye does his best to maintain the beloved traditions of his religion despite his strong-willed daughters’ individual wishes to make their own matches. Tevye, a poor milkman and father of five daughters, has to realize that times are changing and it is his love of family, pride and faith that help him face the dangerous forces in Anatevka that threaten to destroy the very life that he and his fellow villagers are trying to preserve.
Mark Esposito, original bottle dancer in Jerome Robbins’ Broadway will be choreographing Fiddler, along with returning director Jim Hormel and musical director Rick Heckman. Come celebrate the power of tradition and change with this multi-award-winning musical that has danced its way into the hearts of people all over the world for nearly 50 years. The heartwarming score features classics such as Tradition, Sunrise Sunset, Matchmaker and If I Were a Rich Man and the poignant story continues to reach people of all ages from all religions, social classes, and races. Fiddler on the Roof is an honest, humorous show with themes for the entire family to enjoy and you won’t want to miss Torrance Theatre Company’s rendition at the James Armstrong theatre this summer!
